I'll give the film points for sparking discussion. That alone is an achievement for a film.

They are probably getting a little worried and aprehensive because of all of the bad reviews coming out of Europe. Releasing a movie in a staggerred fashion is a good idea when the first group loves it and it builds anticipation in the following areas. When the opposite occurs, it can destroy your subsequent premieres.

I was thinking about this as well, and here are some of the thoughts I had:

David asks Holloway how he would feel if his creators had created him solely because "they could". This seems a very possible explanation, we are nothing more than an experiment.

Why then are they coming to destroy us? In another sscene David asks Shaw "doesn't everyone hope for the death of their parents?" or something along those lines. If the Engineers think along the same lines as David then it would stand to reason that they are coming to destroy their creation before their creation comes to destroy them.

Anyway, those were some of my theories on the way home. I'll go read your article now.

I agree, very thought provoking stuff.

Just a thought about the opening sequence -

I think the theory that it was the beginning of life is plausible and probably what was going on but are we sure that was even Earth?

What if it was LV-223?

What if the Engineer we see was actually committing suicide by consuming the organic goo after turning the bio-weapon on it's creators?

Just a theory.

Some answers below

1)why did that scientist take off his helmet ? He should have known better not to take off your helmet on an alien world. Just because the air was breathable doesn't mean there aren't airborne diseases
It wasn't clear what his background was. So kind of anthropoligist or archeologist? The biologist should have known better. Frankly it was a movie thing because the helmets fog up, so easier to get the actors's helmets off.
2) why didn't the red headed geologist and the other guy not get to the space ship? They left way before the others. They should have been at the spaceship waiting for the others but instead they are stuck in the caves.
Same question I have. The gelogist was mapping the complex. So how the hell could they get lost. With all their tech, only the master map was at the ship? Lame.
3) why wasn't anyone monitoring the guys that were in the cave? Your telling me everyone was sleeping and not one person looking out in case something bad would happen ?( not just monitoring the crew people but the planet in general)
You woud have to assume that the rock storm had caused some interference
4) why didn't they know what happen to the red headed geologist and his partner? They had cameras on them so everything that happen to them was recorded.
Storm interference?
5) why were the space jockeys so small? Even with the suit they weren't even close to the size of the space jockey in the original alien
It worked better for this story that the enigineers weren't so tall.
6) why the hell would you mess with an alien snake creature that's hissing like a cobra...( oh look a pretty hissing cobra alien, let me pet you with my face)
For the best biologist that money could buy, he was a real moron. Better writing could have been with the biologist being the paranoid one and the geologist being the stupid for playing with alien lifeform. But instead, the writers already set up the geologist as the paranoid one.
7) why would you not take weapons on an alien planet if your a scientist?
You don't take a gun with you to meet God. Well, that was Shaw's logic. She ordered that no weapons be brought as to not offend their makers.
8) Why would you open the doors for a zombie ex crew member after the recent events?
The crew wanted to know why the suit's transponder was outside the Prometheus instead of in the engineer's. They thought he was dead.
9) how did he become a zombie in the first place?
Infected by black goo. His face mask did get melted.
10) why did the android poison the crew member?
No clear answer for this other than curiousity as to what would happen. But that makes no sense. If David's priority was to help Weyland, why risk letting a hazardous biological organism loose in the ship with Weyland onboard?
11) wtf did the android say to the space jockey?
We will never know.
12) why was the medical machine only set for males when it was in vickers ship? Its suppose to be so top notch but the machine can only be set for males or females? Plus the machine didn't have anesthia? Or antibiotics ?
The machine was for Weyland, ths the "bypass" comment that Shaw had when she saw it. With all tat future tech, are the writers going to get us to believe they didn't have a hard drive big enough to cover female anatomy too? Lame.
There's more but i can't think of them this second. I really wanted to like this movie but in the end it felt like a giant mind f@ck.
I felt like this movie was just a big theatrical Lost movie. Nothing was answered . I felt like this movie was a big f u . It didn't even take place on the same planet as the one in alien and aliens . Wtf was the point?

I find it surprising that Prometheus isn't even the top grossing movie this weekend.

All bets are off when you're up against an animated film geared towards children. 50 million so far for an R rated film is pretty damn good. I'd wager it ends up making 75-80 mil. domestically over the weekend.

It's on $141 million so far. Hopefully it will bring in enough for an obvious sequel.
