The original two games were difficult. Especially the NES version even with maps if you played it when you were a kid. Even now I bet the average gamer would have a tough time on the NES Metroid without guidance of some kind.
The SNES Super Metroid just improved upon everything and made it one of the best videogames ever.
I want to play the GBA versions again on my DS Lite. I originally played them on the GBA. But both were easy and I remember Zero Mission leaving out the full end run music. Which really bothered me.
The Prime games...I never played the third one. I thought the first two were very polished first person exploration shooters. Not difficult at all. I think I died like twice in both of them. Never played either one a second time. I might one day. I remember being disappointed that in the end of the first one, you didn't have to run to escape after defeating the last boss.
It's important to note that the original NES and SNES games were huge explore on your own type games. Unlike modern games that help and point you where to go. The originals might be harder but that element helped with the immersion aspect. Anything can and will age/date. The only question is will gamers still be able to enjoy them given what the designers were working with at the time. Personally, I still prefer many older videogames to the new ones. Especially since they tend to focus on actual gameplay.
