I think it's a big improvement.

So do I.

But then I thought the old one left a lot to be desired. Prime 1's announcement might have had something to do with this welcome change.

Definitely an improvement. Wish he was not squinting so much, but to be fair, it is consistent with the Alex Ross art. And yes, the Prime 1 announcement definitely put pressure on this statue. For true Alex Ross fans, the advantage of the Prime 1 piece is that the body more closely resembles Alex Ross art, whereas the LBS body is much more muscular. The choice between the two comes down to size preference (1/3 vs 1/4), or accuracy preference. LBS is at a disadvantage there, because their Superman is more generic, relying on change out portraits to give options. That strength (choices) is also a weakness (accuracy).

The portrait is much improved but still the body shape is too far off from Ross original art work. A statue must be viewed in its totality from head to feet.

Having a portrait that resembles Ross artwork but the rest of the statue doesn't is not going to work. It won't be considered as a genuine Alex Ross statue.

Prime 1 Alex Ross Superman is the one to get for true fans of Alex Ross. I don't care about the 1:3 scale. My preference is always 1:4 scale.

LBS had a chance to come up with a proper Alex Ross statue but they screwed it up by making a generic Superman statue with multiple headsculpts instead.

Switching the headsculpts alone won't magically turn this statue into an Alex Ross Superman even with this improved portrait. It is not going to change anything.

It changes something for me. I didn’t like the production sample that Jay showed with the old Alex Ross portrait. This one looks much better.

I suppose it will make those who have already pre-ordered it a little happier.
