It is supposed to look pale. 
You have seen Conan the Barbarian correct? I mean some scenes the paint has soaked away but pretty much charcoal and ash.

Arrow recently restored them in 4K, best they've ever looked. I recently re-watched the first film with the newly remastered music-only track and it's such a cool experience. With how little dialogue there is, it's practically an opera to begin with.
