Daredevil--worth getting into?
Hi all--
I've heard lots of raves lately about Waid's Daredevil, and before that, Bendis'. I've never had interest in the character (or, really, any street-level characters, like Batman), but the older I get, the more good writing is starting to trump everything else. I enjoy DD in New Avengers, but wasn't necessarily impressed with the bits and pieces of Shadowland I was exposed to (mostly crossovers).
I came back to comics during Avengers Disassembled, and Bendis' work (esp. in early New Avengers) is what brought me back on board--well, that and DH's Conan. I also really enjoyed Waid's run on LSH.
I'd appreciate any thoughts! I'm thinking of starting with trades when Bendis came on (unless the writer before him was particularly good), or else with Waid. On the bright side, I don't have to worry about competing DD books; I imagine the story is fairly self contained?
Like I need more books to read...

Bendis all the way through to Brubakers Daredevil easily some of the best stuff out there.
Its pretty easy to collect these in soft cover now, they have the ultimate collections out. HC's are ridiculous hard to collect now unless your willing to pay premiums.
But if you haven't read much Daredevil you'd be robbing yourself by not reading Frank Millers Run or at least Man without Fear and Born Again.
To me thats real Daredevil
Waids Daredevil all though great is more lively than I would like for the character.

I would agree with a lot of what was just said. In VOL # 1 you had the famed Frank Miller run which is unparelled. I also enjoyed the run that Scott McDaniel drw from 319-335 or so. VOL # 2 is all good. I liked the Kevin Smith issues and Bendis and Brubaker's run filled out the majority of that run. YOu can't go wrong with any of that. Diggle's stuff was not good. As for Vol # 3. Waid's DD is great all around check it out you will not be disappointed.

I would definitely recommend the Bendis - Maleev Ultimate collections. There are 3 tpb's , which should be easy to find.
I didn't like Bru's run so much, because it was soooo much doom n Despair.. like nothing could go right for Matt, it just got tedious for me.
Waid's is gr8 Fun, it started of awesome, the last 2 issues have been above average, but i'd trust in Waid.

Thanks for the thoughts! I'll have to go grab the first Bendis & take it from there (stay "current"), & then look back at the Miller once I get going.
I'd have guessed Brubaker would have been good on this one. The only stuff of his I've read I haven't been crazy about was his Uncanny run (which I thought was OK... but maybe that was more the Tan art). If I get "on a roll" with the Bendis, I'm sure I'll at least try the Bru.
I'm so bummed Brubaker is leaving Cap (although admittedly I am about half a year behind on that one)... at least he's still on Winter Soldier for a while.
Thanks again!

IMO:
Miller - Essential reading
Chichester/McDaniel - Fall from grace great stuff! Got me reading DD again.
Smith Bendis/Maleev, Brubaker/Lark - The entire 2nd series is incredible, except for Shadowland, it was crap and ended my reading of Daredevil.
I heard Waid is really good, A return to more superhero genre stories. I'm waiting for TPB.

Everyone has an opinion.
I couldn't stand Smith/Quesada's run on Daredevil. Thought it was pure drek.
Frank Miller = the best there is on the character.
Chichester/McDaniel = Really good stuff. Tons of fun. Fall from Grace is packaged as a trade and well worth it.
Bendis/Maleev = outstanding
Brubaker/Lark = some, justifiably so, believe it too dark and depressing. I really liked it.
Shadowland = pure crap.
Mark Waid = What the man writes is pure gold. Everything he touches, from Captain America to Fantastic Four to Marvels. No surprise, then, that his Daredevil is genius. Highly recommended.

Need to check out these other Waid runs! It's only started to dawn on me how much I like the guy. Fun stuff (compared to Fraction-fun, which strikes me as sometimes trying too hard--that said, I usually enjoy Fraction, too, but his stuff is much fluffier than Waid's).
